A Recent Farm Inspection - The Daily Wag - Pets - MarthaStewart.com

Posted by Francesca

We?ve been doing a lot of traveling lately visiting our homes in Maine and in East Hampton. We love going places, but we?ve been away from the farm a lot and Sharkey and I felt that we needed to conduct a farm inspection.

Sharkey, there's always so much happening on the farm. I feel like we miss so much when we're away! Let's take the Kawasaki around and get ourselves reacquainted.

Wow, Francesca! Look how many Gravenstein apples are growing on the espaliers! They're all turning a beautiful shade of red!

Sharkey, I've always wondered why apples on the tree look as though they're covered with a gray dust. Do you know what that is?

It's not dust, Francesca. Apples produce a natural, waxy, coating to protect the fruit skin from cracking and to help keep moisture in. It's perfectly safe to ingest.

There are even more apples on the trees in the old apple orchard, Sharkey! My, we are certainly going to have an amazing apple crop this year. Just think of all the cider we will make!

Look, Franny. While we were away, our new guinea fowl friends were moved into their own private space in the chicken coop! I guess Martha wanted them to have the company of hens and roosters.

And not to mention, geese! Hey, Pomeranians! We Frenchies want you to take really good care of the guinea fowl, okay? They need to grow strong so that they can eat all the ticks on the property to keep us healthy!

The vegetable garden looks great, Francesca! Look at how well the tomatoes are growing!

Very soon, we're going to have more tomatoes than we know what to do with! Martha loves the tomato harvest and will can many of them for the winter.

Oh my, Sharkey. I got so excited about all of the apples on the trees, I almost forgot about the pear grove!

These Bartlett pears are an especially fragrant variety. I can't wait until they begin to ripen!
