University staff face legal action - The Nation

The Nation February 24, 2012 1:00 am

Although the staffers, of an unspecified university, had returned the money to the funds on behalf of the duped students, the crimes had been committed and they must face criminal action, directorgeneral Tharit Phengdit said yesterday.

The DSI is also looking into similar complaints or occurrences reported at 32 government and private universities, mostly located in Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani in the Northeast. Complaints were made by 47 students claiming to have been duped but were still required by the funds to repay the loans, which they never received or applied for.

According to the complaints, lecturers and staffers of universities in both provinces had offered loans and studies to students in 2006. They agreed to enrol and sign loan papers, but were never contacted. The students began making complaints to police and both funds after they were required to repay the loans in 2010.

The Krung Thai Bank, which offered the loans through the two funds, is demanding a total of Bt3,721,340 from the 47 students, who were given certain sums by the staffers, and then told they would have to repay the balance to the bank.

The first Bt4.8 billion in loans was offered through the two funds in 2006 to students at 903 colleges and universities. A new offer made a few years later brought the number of students obtaining loans to 315,000.

Viewpoint: Corbett's proposed budget offers good start for discussion

by Edward J. McCann Jr.

The summary accompanying Gov. Tom Corbett?s 2012 budget message described his broad-based collection of initiatives under the title JOBSFirst PA as ?a comprehensive road map to economic recovery in PA.?

Let?s see where the road map points.

JOBSFirst PA calls for the creation of a Governor?s Advisory Council on Privatization and Innovation to infuse state government with a culture more like the private sector. JOBSFirst also would create an Interagency Coordination Advisory Group to focus on ?big picture, cross-agency? issues affecting economic development. It also would create the Liberty Financing Authority, envisioned as a one-stop shop for business financing that would integrate current Department of Community and Economic Development loan programs and potentially streamline processes for applicants and create more flexible financing tools.

JOBSFirst also offers tax relief and incentives, such as the continuing phaseout of the Capital Stock and Franchise Tax and tax credits for research and development, film production and job creation.

The budget also promises development of critical transportation infrastructure, although as a separate item, and enhanced support of entrepreneurship and innovation.

All this is combined with two principal work-force development strategies: a comprehensive job-matching system and the Keystone Works initiative to encourage commonwealth employers to match unemployment compensation support with on-the-job training for unemployed workers.

Pennsylvania?s CareerLinks, the state?s brand-name one-stop work-force centers, have had a technology-based job-matching system, known as the Commonwealth Workforce Development System, or CWDS, for some time. It was developed, at considerable cost, during the Rendell administration. The new proposal would improve the system through additional technology support and better management of information. The anticipated benefits would be greater understanding of the skills and competencies of unemployed workers and the ability to better match skills with employers need. Details of the plan are not available yet, but work-force development practitioners are generally supportive of the effort, given the expertise of Department of Labor & Industry?s Center for Workforce Information and Analysis, which would have more responsibility for implementation.

Those familiar with the current CWDS system concede that it is less user-friendly than commercial job boards, mainly because it must simultaneously provide both the labor exchange function and the complex accountability and demographic reporting requirements of federal and state funding sources, a burden private systems don?t bear. The extent to which the new system could compensate for that burden remains to be seen.

The Keystone Works program also could be promising. It would allow unemployment compensation claimants to collect benefits while participating in on-the-job training by employers, with the companies receiving up to $1,500 in state incentive payments over the course of training. This would be a different approach to traditional U. S. Department of Labor job-training programs, which work on a ?hire first? basis and pay a wage during training instead of unemployment benefits.

The budget message is the beginning of the conversation, not the end. Both the business and economic-development communities would welcome the continuing phaseout of the Capital Stock and Franchise Tax (see ?Cover Story,? page 10) and any real streamlining of DCED?s loan programs. As details emerge on the work-force development system changes, we?ll have a better picture of whether job matching is improved or employers embrace the training incentives.

Infrastructure investment may well be the No. 1 action the commonwealth can take to spur economic competitiveness and job creation, but finding agreement on how to pay for it may still be difficult.

On balance, however, Gov. Corbett?s message is a good starting point.

Edward J. McCann Jr. is chief operating officer of the Berks County Workforce Investment Board.

NCsoft | Gameforumer.com: MMORPG | Gaming News | Reviews ...

Posted by admin on February 20th, 2012

Earlier today, NCsoft released its financial report for the 4th Quarter of 2011, which is the final 4 months. As seen n the chart below, Aion is the king of earnings for the mega corporation, with Lineage 1 on a near 2nd place. This is really quite an achievement for Lineage 1, seeing how the North American server has closed down and the China server in the process of having a Closed Beta under a new publisher, Tencent Games.

Comparing the income for 2011 against 2010 (yearly comparison), there is a slight drop across the board. It seems insignificant enough to raise emergency alarms across the company, but the board will want to have a better 2012 with big games including Blade Soul (going live by mid 2012) and Guild Wars 2 launching.

I just received news that NCsoft has also bought a majority stake in Korean developer Ntreev, the studio behind games such as Pangya, Trickster and a host of successful baseball games in Korea. More on that when more info is available.

Free Legal Question: Real Estate Law | California | I purchased a ...

I purchased a home several years ago but the payments were too high and space was limited for our expanding family so a friend took over the mortgage a year ago. We did a title transfer as a "gift" and she was supposed to refinance last year. But she never did. I think the problem is that the value of the home is probably $100K lower than what is owed to the bank. So, if she were to ever default on the mortgage payment for any reason, that would make me financially liable and continue to affect my credit. If she defaulted could they go after my checking accounts too? I'm in a very bad situation. It stresses me out when I get phone calls for late payments. What are my options? Would it be to get her to sign some sort of contract between the two of us saying that she will continue to be financially liable for the mortgage payments in the event of accident, death, etc.?? I don't know what to do. What are some legal steps that I can take from this point forward to protect myself?

Strategic planning is a process in which an organization defines its strategy and makes decisions on allocating its resources so that it can pursue the decided strategy.
Strategic planning is fundamentally a decision making process, based on asking simple questions, analyzing the desired range of answers, and choosing among the available options:
??????????? What we do???????????????????????? Where are we going?
??????????? Where are we now??????????????????? How will we get there?

??????????? How did we get here???????????????? When will we get there?

Zandile Blay: After the Hype: The Return of Laquan Smith to NYFW

It is the summer of 2009, and the relative tranquility of West Broadway is shattered by the appearance of Laquan Smith. It's not his boyish good looks or lean 6'1 frame that turns heads -- but the sight of said frame draped in gold leggings, high-heels and a bright neoprene jacket. If onlookers were confused by where Smith was heading in that outfit, he wasn't. Smith's immediate destination was a Tommy Hilfiger party hosted by Paper Magazine. But his final destination? Dominating the fashion world.

At first blush, it seemed a tall order for a kid from Queens who was turned down by both F.I.T and Parson's and had only a brief internship at Blackbook Magazine to speak of. Yet no training and no contacts were no match for what he did have: intense ambition. Crazy outfits were only part of the plan to attract attention and build his Rolodex -- and it worked. By February 2010, less than a year later, Smith found himself experiencing a rise that was nothing less than meteoric.

In rapid succession he caught the eye of Vogue editor, Andre Leon Talley who brought him under his wing. The relationship was instrumental in garnering exposure for Smith's debut and sophomore collections, both of which attracted guests like Diane von Furstenberg and saw Venus Williams, and other celebs, walking the runway. In the blink of an eye, the young designer had morphed from outsider to insider, and the bright lights of Fashion stardom were finally flashing.

Then things went dark.

As 2011 began the designer retreated, as he tells it, to regroup and focus on transitioning from a bold-faced name to a business. His critics feasted on the quiet, interpreting it as the failure of a young designer who rose too soon. While others called it the end of a flash in the pan with minimal talent. But they didn't count on Smith's saving grace: intense work ethic. It was that which helped him land investors and build a team to assist with design, sales and press for his brand.

2012-02-15-RLD_5630.jpg

They surrounded Smith this past Tuesday as he calmly prepared for a glitzy return to the runway at the Bryant Park Hotel. Under the aegis of rising fashion publicist, Jacqueline Cooper, the show attracted notables like celebrity stylist June Ambrose (above with Smith), Bravo Reality TV Star Chef Roble, editors and bloggers alike. A casual sweep of the nearly two hundred people in the audience revealed a house divided. Many were there to congratulate, but some were there to critique.

Ironically, Smith gave both sides fuel for the fire with a collection that expanded on his neoprene based 'Water Goddess' debut. While the liberal use of the fabric could point to a lack of growth, his feminine silhouettes, inclusion of crocheted knits and clever use of eye-catching PVC details confirmed Smith's growth. The young designer had deftly turned out pieces that were at once fashion forward and wearable.

By the end of the evening the collection, titled 'Robotic Dream,' garnered the ultimate compliment from celebrity stylist Wouri Vice. "There was a cohesion and a precision applied to his work that I've never seen from him before," said Vice. "He showed you how one aesthetic could work for different women at every age and stage. Simply beautiful."

As those who agreed with that sentiment made a beeline to congratulate the designer, he greeted them with his signature smile. Smith doled out his greetings and hugs, dressed comfortably in black jeans, a black tank and black velvet Doc Martens. It was a far cry from the flamboyant young man who burst onto the scene two years ago -- but ultimately, it was no surprise. His simple dress, expanded collection and growing business were the manifestation of a course he'd charted years ago. After the hype, Smith has arrived where he intended all along.

New Mob Museum highlights Las Vegas' history

A wall of images of mobsters is displayed Feb. 13 at The Mob Museum in Las Vegas. The museum, also known as the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, opens on Feb. 14. The museum chronicles the history of organized crime in America and the efforts of law enforcement to combat it.

?

By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

The promoters of Las Vegas? newest museum would like you to say hello to their little friends. Opening on Feb. 14, The Mob Museum chronicles the lives ? and often gruesome deaths ? of Al Capone, ?Bugsy? Siegel and a rogue?s gallery of crooks, hoods and Mafioso.

?You can?t tell the story of Las Vegas without talking about organized crime,? said Jonathan Ullman, the museum?s executive director. ?It?s part of the genesis of the city as the destination that it became.?

Or, as three-time mayor and former ?mob attorney? Oscar Goodman puts it: ?Las Vegas is unique. Our founding fathers were alleged mobsters.?

Goodman, in fact, had a seminal role in the development of the downtown museum, proposing the idea 10 years ago when, as mayor, he oversaw the transfer of Las Vegas? federal courthouse and post office to the city. The building, it turns out, had been one of the sites for the landmark Kefauver hearings, a U.S. Senate investigation of organized crime in the early 1950s.

The museum, which operates under the full name of the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, features 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, which, according to Ullman, is fairly evenly split between a history of the mob and the efforts of the G-men, police and elected officials who fought it.

Isaac Brekken / AP

Former "mob attorney" and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is pictured Feb. 13 at The Mob Museum in Las Vegas.

Among the former, exhibits tell the stories of Siegel, Meyer Lansky and other early Vegas operators, along with those of latter-day thugs, including Sam Giancana, John ?the Teflon Don? Gotti and Frank ?Lefty? Rosenthal, the role model for casino owner Sam ?Ace? Rothstein, aka Robert De Niro, in ?Casino.?

Signature exhibits include the wall from the infamous St. Valentine?s Day massacre in 1929, the barber?s chair in which Albert Anastasia met his gruesome end in 1957 and a film that explores Hollywood?s ongoing fascination with wiseguys, goodfellas and other made men.?Given the subject matter, it should come as no surprise that some exhibits include graphic images depicting violence, prostitution and other illicit activities, and while there are cautionary signs throughout the museum, it may not be appropriate for small children.?

On the other side of the law, visitors can explore the efforts of famous mob-busters, including Eliot Ness, J. Edgar Hoover and Joe Pistone, who is perhaps better known by the name he adopted during six years undercover in the Bonanno and Colombo crime families: Donnie Brasco.

According to Michael Green, a history professor at the College of Southern Nevada and a consultant to the museum, the goal is not to glamorize gangsters but to tell both sides of a story that encompasses immigration, Prohibition, the criminal justice system and the influence of popular culture.

?History is sometimes beautiful and oftentimes ugly,? he told msnbc.com. ?If we can tell the truth, people will come out not feeling that we glamorized it but that we informed them.?

As for Goodman, he, as is his wont, clearly hopes people will also be entertained. When asked if he?d contributed any of his (alleged) mob-related memorabilia, he mentioned one item in particular, the briefcase he used while defending the likes of Lansky, Rosenthal and Tony ?The Ant? Spilotro.

?I used to leave Las Vegas with it empty,? he said, ?and come back with it full of Mr. Green.?

Germany arrests alleged Moroccan spy (AP)

BERLIN ? Prosecutors in Germany say police have arrested a man on suspicion of spying for Moroccan intelligence on supporters of the Polisario group, which seeks independence for the Western Sahara region.

Federal prosecutors say the suspect, identified only as Mohammed B. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested in Berlin on Wednesday. They said in a statement that police searched the man's apartment as well as houses and offices of two other suspects.

Prosecutors say the 56-year-old Moroccan-German dual national is suspected of having spied mostly on German-based members of Polisario.

The group advocates independence for the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony taken over by Morocco in 1975.

Director Tim Burton's latest?movie won't be in theaters until June 22, but the trailer for it is already making waves all across the?internet. And for good reason: The not-quite-historically-accurate movie, titled?Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, casts our beloved sixteenth president as a slayer of the undead.

Yes, seriously. This is a real, actual movie that is being made.

The movie is based on the book of the same name, written by?Seth Grahame-Smith, author of the best selling?Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In it, President Lincoln's mother is slain by a vampire ? just like in real life ? which drives the Great Emancipator to kick vampire butt with such fervor that he has no time available with which to take names.

The?3D movie chronicles President Lincoln's life and rise through politics, from the famed Lincoln-Douglas debate to the elaborately choreographed ax battles that the president engaged in with stunning regularity. Actor?Benjamin Walker stars as Lincoln.

Why Are Apple Fans so Annoying? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | "I have an iPhone, but it's just a phone to me," the person I was speaking with said. (Perhaps he knew I was an Android fan.) "I'm not, like, fanatical about it or anything."

In saying that, he was trying to set himself apart from the stereotypical Apple fan -- the one who ignores reason, evidence, and common sense. Who buys Apple products to attract members of their preferred gender. Who's duped by marketing, and keeps being duped over and over again, year after year. And who then has the audacity to lecture fans of non-Apple products on how their manufacturers are doing things all wrong.

All of these traits are annoying, to be sure. But the most annoying thing about Apple fans?

They're right

And I mean that by basically any definition you can think of. What's the most valuable company in the world, as of a few months ago? Apple. (Its biggest competitor for the title was not Google or Microsoft, but Exxon.) Which one company has been making two-thirds of all the profit to be had in the whole smartphone would? Apple. And its record quarterly net profit of $13 billion these past few months can buy an awful lot of ads.

But what about those ads? Aren't they style over substance? You tell me. Here's a sample of its recent iPhone ads. Do you know what they all have in common? They show people actually using the product, and it works just like in real life. Compare and contrast with this infamous Verizon Droid ad, which talks about trading "hairdo for can-do" but is basically nonsense sexist imagery. Or the one that shows Droids being shot out of stealth fighters. Or a Motorola Xoom transforming into a spaceship.

The Droid was supposed to be the anti-iPhone. If the opposite of the iPhone is vapid imagery and form over function, what does that say about Apple's products?

That they don't work as well

Or else they supposedly have an "Apple tax," which apparently only applies to the Mac since the iPhone and iPad are priced extremely competitively. (They should be; Apple has so much cash, it can buy up the whole supply of the special components it needs, according to Philip Elmer-DeWitt of CNN Money.)

But that tax is willingly paid, year after year, by people who know the alternatives. And every year, fans of the Android- or Windows-based alternatives rant and rail at Apple fans for not buying those instead.

They don't for a number of reasons. Because they're already tied into the Apple ecosystem, with iTunes and iCloud and the App Store. Because they really do like how Apple's products make them feel. And because, when they bought a Mac or iPad, they felt for the first time like this thing was designed just for them ... not to fill a certain market niche or make a certain sales target. Like the people who made it cared about it, enough to do their best.

That's something that many have never experienced anywhere else, at least not in the tech world. And until the fans -- and makers -- of other products realize that, Apple's just going to get bigger and bigger. Until it's too late for anyone else to compete on an even playing field.

Ecommerce involves shopping for and selling of product or services through the Internet. Ahmadinejad: Iran to reveal new nuke achievements

(AP) ? President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran will soon reveal "very big new nuclear achievements."

Ahmadinejad spoke at a rally in Tehran on Saturday as Iranians marked the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that toppled the country's pro-Western monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power.

Ahmadinejad did not elaborate on the upcoming announcement but insisted Iran would never give up its uranium enrichment ? a process that makes material for reactors as well as weapons.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran has said it is forced to manufacture nuclear fuel rods, which provide fuel for reactors, on its own since international sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state TV is showing tens of thousands of pro-government demonstrators rallying across the country to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

A real-size model of the U.S. drone RQ-170 Sentinel, captured by Iran in December near the border with Afghanistan, is on display at the rally in Tehran's famous Azadi, or Freedom, square.

Iran has touted the drone's capture as one of its chief successes against the West. The TV report says the drone is a "symbol of power" of the Iranian armed forces "against the global arrogance" of the U.S.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to address the Tehran demonstration on Saturday.

The 1979 revolution toppled Iran's pro-west monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power.

(AP) ? All of a sudden, abortion, contraception and gay marriage are at the center of American political discourse, with the struggling ? though improving ? economy pushed to the background.

Social issues don't typically dominate the discussion in shaky economies. But they do raise emotions important to factors like voter turnout. And they can be key tools for political candidates clamoring for attention, campaign cash or just a change of subject in an election year.

"The public is reacting to what it's hearing about," said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center. In a political season, he said, "when the red meat is thrown out there, the politicians are going to go after it."

The economy still tops the list of voters' concerns and probably will still shape this presidential election. For now, at least, the culture wars of the 1990s are back. It's not clear which party will benefit because the same group of voters that opposes abortion might split over gay marriage or whether cancer research should be immune from politics. And it's not yet known to what extent, if at all, social issues will influence voters on Election Day.

Jobs, jobs, jobs ? it's been the governing mantra of both parties since the economic bust of 2008, through President Barack Obama's sweeping overhaul of health insurance and the 2010 elections that returned control of the House to Republicans. Since then, voters have turned angry while remaining anxious over the economy's crawl toward stability. Republicans have been keen to blame the slow-motion progress on Obama in their drive to deny him a second term.

Then, as the GOP nomination fight churned with no resolution in sight, the economy began to grow. Unemployment rates dipped. And a cascade of cultural political developments inspired a new set of talking points for the year's crop of political hopefuls:

?Supporters of Planned Parenthood, which provides abortion services, helped force the resignation of Susan G. Komen For the Cure executive Karen Handel after the breast cancer research group cut grants to the organization, then reversed course.

?Catholic bishops began sparring with the White House over a new requirement that Catholic-affiliated institutions such as hospitals and schools must provide insurance coverage for birth control for their employees even though the church opposes artificial contraception.

?A federal appeals court in California struck down the state's gay marriage ban, prompting criticism from the Republican presidential candidates and others who charged that unelected judges were overruling the will of voters.

For both parties, social policy puts key constituencies at stake. Republicans are courting the religious conservatives that populate their base, including Catholics in battleground states like Ohio and Pennsylvania. Obama, meanwhile, is trying to preserve support among women, moderates and independents.

Wednesday was a key pivot point.

Hours after GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum won all three states holding votes Tuesday night and stalled Mitt Romney's modest winning streak, congressional leaders issued tightly coordinated statements on another subject: The White House's policy on birth control coverage was a government mandate that threatens religious freedom and violates the Constitution.

In a floor speech rare for a speaker of the House, Ohioan John Boehner, a Catholic, accused the administration of undermining some of the country's most vital institutions, such as Catholic charities, schools and hospitals. He demanded that Obama rescind the policy and pledged that Congress would if Obama didn't.

"This attack by the federal government on religious freedom in our country cannot stand, and will not stand," Boehner said.

Across the Capitol, one rising star made clear the matter was a starkly political issue in the year's presidential and congressional elections.

"We have plenty of other issues to take to the American people throughout the year and in the November elections. This doesn't have to be one of them," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said in English. As he often does, Rubio repeated his statement in Spanish ? an effort to make sure Hispanic voters in Florida and beyond, many of them Catholic, got the message.

But where Republicans cast the White House's contraception policy as an assault on the freedom of religion itself, Democrats argued for the preservation of affordable birth control for women. The White House circulated letters from women's groups defending the policy and signaled on Tuesday that a compromise was possible.

Former Obama aide Jen Psaki suggested the uproar was due in part to the GOP nomination fight, noting that the administration's directive requiring church-affiliated employers to cover birth control for their employees was based on a policy used by many states.

"Where has the outrage been up to now?" Psaki said.

On the presidential campaign trail, the GOP candidates competing for conservative votes presented themselves as foes of any efforts to remove religion and morals from public discourse. Some described those efforts in the language of war.

Romney, a Mormon, is embracing social issues in a way he hasn't to this point in the campaign as he fends off threats from two challengers. The Obama administration, he says, is waging "an assault on religion."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a Catholic, says Democrats have "declared war on the Catholic Church."

Santorum's resurgence has coincided with the surge in controversy over social issues. During a two-day sprint through Oklahoma and Texas, he used the marriage and contraception rulings on the two coasts to raise broader concerns that the courts and the Obama administration are "trying to shutter faith" and "push it out of the public square."

"They are taking faith and crushing it," he told a Texas rally Wednesday. "When you marginalize faith in America, when you remove the pillar of God-given rights, then what's left?"

It's powerful rhetoric, to be sure. But interviews Thursday with nearly two dozen attendees of the Conservative PAC convention in Washington produced remarkably similar sentiments: Even the most conservative voter cares most about the nation's fiscal health.

"I really think this election will turn on the economy," said Tina Katcheves, 38, a patent attorney from Howard County, Md.

Social Media Week Returns to a City Near You: February 13th - 17th, 2012

Next week marks the launch of the fourth annual Social Media Week, a global event with discussions about media use. I?ll be covering some of the events here on AiP. We?ll return to our regularly scheduled program on Feb. 20th.

The online social world is rapidly developing around us. And there is no longer a choice about participation?not if you hope to be heard. The social media tools that constitute this landscape are diverse and plentiful. It?s easy to feel overwhelmed, however, by the number of services you can find yourself maintaining, easy to feel that it?s impossible to keep up, and easy to give up. But giving up carries a heavy weight. It means reduced connectivity and reduced access to information. And while some may insist that they can get along without these channels, data from the Pew Internet and American Life Project suggests otherwise:

  • Four in five American adults (82%) own and carry a cell phones.
  • Half of all adult cell owners (51%) have used their phones to get information they needed right away.

With the launch of digital government initiatives, like New York City?s @311NYC, email, and text alerts, people can get and share information on-the-go about traffic, school events, weather warnings, or crime. As we increasingly grow accustomed to processing data this way, we?re also beginning to increasingly use it as a means of communicating with each other:

65% of adult Internet users are on a social networking site, like MySpace, Facebook or LinkedIn.

And we can?t overlook Twitter: there were 13.7 million Super Bowl-related tweets?a number that should give even the staunchest social media critic pause.

The return of Social Media Week for its fourth installation is another indicator that these measures can no longer be viewed as fleeting trends. Our methods of communication are changing, as are our methods of collecting and digesting information. In all areas. Don Tapscott, keynote speaker and author of Macrowikinomics, views social media as a new means of production. ?It?s not a means of hooking up online,? he said. ?It?s a platform to self organize; to get us out of the industrial age to a new age.? Indeed, social media has been at the root of revolutions and major instances of change. And this year?s theme, ?Empowering Change through Collaboration,? captures this sweeping social spirit with an eye toward the future.

From February 13th through 17th, Social Media Week will be observed in 12 major cities around the world with panel discussions, networking events, and parties that are largely free to the public, though registration is requires in many instances. The open conference setting is important in overcoming one of the largest hurdles we face in the technical age?the double digital divide?by inviting everyone to join the conversation. Events are hosted throughout the City (there are more than 350 planned in New York City), and are organized around central themes including art and culture, advertising and marketing, business and innovation, global society, health and wellness, and social and environmental change. And while event coverage has always been readily available on Twitter, this year global partner Nokia launched a real time infographic tool that can offer targeted information about cities and panels. It?s pretty neat, and if you aren?t planning to attend, it might be worth a look because it hone users in to specific panels and events around the world. To help keep participants organized, there?s also an app they can download (though I have mixed feelings about conference apps, since they seem to lose their usefulness post-conference).

As a Social Media Week attendee who has watched this particular event grow successively bigger while retaining its definition and increasing its inclusiveness, it is heartening to see the new discussions that are beginning to happen. Last year, the science community put their toes in the water, and this year, health and wellness will have its own content hub hosted by Saatchi and Saatchi Wellness. There are many hurdles to social media participation in health and wellness, but there is also a need to communicate with people in ways that are accessible to them. Saatchi and Saatchi?s Ned Russell hopes that the Social Media Week collective can offer some guidance on how to go about incorporating these forms of media into the delivery of health and wellness services. He hopes that where the FDA has been vague, collaboration between so many different types of expertise can offer practical suggestions to put a plan into action.

Also new this year is an exercise in deploying online social networks. ?Can Man Survive on Social Media Alone?? is a social experience that tracks two individuals?Daphne from Singapore (#CanManSG) and Martin from London (#CanManLondon)?as they trade cities and try to survive with little more than help from their networks. You can follow along on Facebook (facebook.com/CanManSG or facebook.com/CanManLondon) or the hashtags above on Twitter. The exercise is reminiscent of the ways travellers found help after being stranded following the Eyjafjallajokull eruption.

Registration is still open for SMW events, though I imagine they are filling fast. Can?t be there in person? Many events are streamed live. And you can always follow along on Twitter @socialmediaweek or #smw12. And if you see me, say hello?let?s connect offline for a few minutes.

LinkedIn Groups: International Business Team Building Network for ...

Posted on by Anne Thornley-Brown, M.B.A. @executiveoasis

It?s no secret that a lot of companies simply aren?t getting a lot of bang for their team building buck.? I?ve previously blogged about top 10 team building pitfalls but by far the most common are:

  • Confusing team recreation with team building
  • Trying to cram team building into such a short timeframe that it has to be diluted and ?dumbed down? to the point that it is meaningless.
  • executives abdicating the responsibility for driving team building initiatives and delegating it to inexperienced team members

To help executives have instant access to information to create effective team building, the International Business Team Building Network for Executives was formed on LinkedIn almost 3 years ago. It?s a growing network of over 225 executives from 30 countries on just about every continent. More are welcome

Some of the topics under exploration have included:

  • Innovation Lessons from Steve Jobs
  • Can Team Building Improve Engagement and the Bottom Line
  • Competitive Alliances: Lessons from the Canadian Hockey Arena
  • Innovation Lessons from Tim Hortons ? A Canadian Institution
  • Meeting, Team Building & Event Design: Integrity vs Flexibility
  • Team Building in Dubai

There is also other?discussions of interest to executives including?:

  • Executive Social Media Primer
  • Strategic Sales for Executives
  • Strategic Marketing for Executives

While membership is restricted primarily to CEOs, Vice-Presidents and other executives, the group does accept a handful of team building facilitators and consultants.

The stipulation is that they agree to contribute meaningful content that is of interest to senior executives. Care is taken to find contributers from around the world. From time to time, spaces open up if some consultants find that they just can?t contribute regularly.

So, if you are an executive or a team building consultant with meaningful content and the time to contribute it regularly, apply for membership today. You?re likely to pick up a number of strategies to take your team building initiatives to the next level.

World News - Beatle's ex-wife says Piers Morgan heard hacked call

Pool via Reuters

A still image from broadcast footage shows Heather Mills speaking at the Leveson Inquiry at the High Court in central London, Thursday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Paul McCartney's ex-wife said Thursday a voicemail that CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan boasted of hearing had been illegally hacked.

Morgan has consistently denied he authorized the use of phone-hacking in his days as a tabloid newspaper editor in Britain. He has not offered an explanation for how he came to hear the message left on Heather Mills' mobile phone.

The accusation has dragged Morgan into a phone-hacking scandal which has damaged Rupert Murdoch's media empire and has had wide ramifications for the entire British press.

Giving evidence to an inquiry into British media ethics, Mills said she had left a house she shared with McCartney in early 2001 after they had had a row and turned her phone off.

The next morning she said she had received about 25 messages on her phone, all of which appeared to have been listened to, including one in which McCartney "sang a little ditty of one of his songs." She said she deleted the messages.

Later that day, a reporter called her to say he had heard the couple had argued and that McCartney had left a message in which he sang to her. This, she told the inquiry, could only have come from her phone being hacked.

The inquiry was told the unnamed reporter was a former employee from the Trinity Mirror Group though not from the Daily Mirror, one of the group's papers, which Morgan edited from 1995 to 2004.

Asked if she had ever made a recording of McCartney's call or had played it to Morgan herself, Mills said: "Never."

Mills, a former model who married McCartney in 2002 and divorced six years later, said Morgan, "a man that has written nothing but awful things about me for years," would have relished telling the inquiry if she had played a personal voicemail message to him.

Giving evidence in December, Morgan, who bragged about hearing the message in a newspaper column in 2006, refused to say who had played him the recorded message of the call, saying he was protecting a source.

Morgan left open the possibility that the voicemail had been played to him with Mills' approval, but Mills said Thursday that was impossible. "Never," she said. "Never ever."

Morgan also edited the now defunct News of the World tabloid at the center of the hacking scandal from 1994 to 1995, though his tenure was before the practice became rife. He has boasted that he knew about phone-hacking well before the scandal broke, but subsequently said he was referring to rumors.

Morgan has written in his diaries about a "little trick" for eavesdropping on voicemails that he heard of as early as 2001.

One former Mirror employer has told the inquiry hacking was widespread on the paper when Morgan was editor, and Trinity's chief executive has said some reporters might have secretly engaged in the practice.

The phone hacking scandal shook Britain's police, who were accused of failing to investigate allegations that Murdoch's News of the World tabloid had hacked into the phones of thousands of people, including celebrities and murder victims to get stories.

It was also an embarrassment for British Prime Minister David Cameron, who had hired a former News of the World editor as his spokesman.

Choosing Products For Private label sms | Departments

Targeted audience reach ? Private label sms makes it possible for you to reach a extremely focused on audience with the ability to easily target & personalise direct marketing messages to different client groups. Cell phones, unlike PC?s, are most often used by 1 individual only meaning the focused on message will reach the correct user every time. Focusing on consumer groups specifically will make your mobile campaigns more pertinent & eventually more effective.

Tremendously productive two way communication ? cell phones are with users practically 24/7 and are a particularly trusted and personal device. In contrast to emails, SMS text messages are basically usually opened and read, normally immediately when received. The typical open rate for text messages is over 90% compared with around 20% for email campaigns. Cell phone users use their phones as a communication channel already, so communicating with a company in this medium turns out to be a lot more familiar & simple job than it would be with a time-honored media such as Tv or print. Two way communication permits you to engage your consumer on a personal level and improve more powerful client relationships.

More expense efficient ? Mobile advertising has a way lower price than other advertising channels. The expense is minimal due to the fact the major expenses incurred with a text message campaign are low per message costs sent to a targeted and engaged audience. Lower costs indicates you could maintain budgets & successfully spread your advertising spend across a number of advertising channels. Rapid to implement ? Mobile marketing campaigns are speedy and easy to create and can be deployed instantly meaning you can see the outcomes of your campaigns far more rapidly.

Further response rates than classic direct advertising channels ? Reseller text messages has a higher response rate than time-honored direct marketing channels, and because the channel is still comparatively new it has not reached a point of saturation or distrust in the way other advertising channels have. Average response rates for mobile marketing are around 15%, around five times further than the average email marketing campaign. Further response rates implies less wasted media spend & further Return on investment from mobile marketing plans & budgets.

Potential to simply integrate with other media channels ? mobile marketing could be readily integrated with other media channels which includes Tv, radio, print, outdoor, email and online to produce an integrated advertising campaign. Adding mobile marketing to the mix adds an element of interactivity and consumer participation that many campaigns making use of classic media lack.

Relevant & accurate client data ? customer databases stay accurate and pertinent far longer than traditional postal or email addresses for the reason that folks typically keep their mobile numbers for a lot longer time than an email or postal address. This means higher accuracy & less wasted media spend. Reduced risk of outlay ? The ease, speed and cost effectiveness of a mobile marketing campaign means there is a minimised risk of financial commitment as outcomes might be seen swiftly & messages may be adapted based upon results with minimal spend throughout the overall process.

Exceptionally trackable ? Cell Phone advertising is exceptionally trackable because of the capacity for buyers to respond directly and instantly. White label mobile marketing can also be used to track the effectiveness of other marketing channels by such as a direct response call to action in, e.g., a Television advertisement. Your opponents are doing it ? Based on a recent report ?The state of the industry: Mobile advertising? by Millennial Media, 60% of non-mobile marketers plan to launch a mobile campaign in 2010. Of present mobile marketers 31% will invest between $100k and $249k and 13% will invest between $1M & $5M. The report also states that practically 80% of respondents felt the mobile medium met their ambitions with 9% saying cell telephone advertising performed beyond their wildest expectations. With more and more businesses benefiting from the power of mobile advertising, in the event you do not use it, you may just fall behind!
