UK legally enforces PEGI video games rating system - MCM Buzz

From today (July 30th), retailers can be prosecuted should they sell an 18, 16, or?even a 12 PEGI rated video game to anyone who is underage. If they do, it can result in a fine of ?5,000 and a jail sentence of up to six months. In an effort to protect young children from playing games they shouldn?t be, video games will now drop the BBFC certificate, for they will now be classified by the Pan European Game Information (PEGI).

So what does this mean for you? Well if you?re under?18, or you?re a parent to a child who is under 18 that plays games, you?ll probably be looking at the PEGI rating a lot more closely now.?

This move has come about following recommendations raised by Tanya Byron?s report, Safer Children in a Digital World, to make sure that children only play what?s suitable for their age. According to Byron?s report, ?having a dual classification system and two sets of symbols often made things confusing for the consumer, especially for parents and children.? It also cited how the current classification systems had not been effective in relation to ?consumer awareness, understanding and use of the ratings information.?

On Sky News today, Byron said, ?This is about what is appropriate for children to play. I recommended it should be illegal from 12 and under for children to be sold these games.?

The worry is that despite the advanced storylines and mature themes tackled in video games, they are often still seen by some parents as children?s play things. Many will still purchase another instalment of Call of Duty for their children in an effort to keep them quiet.

It?s worth nothing that in Byron?s report, she does highlight that better information and support is needed, given the lack of responsibility when it comes to parents buying video games for their children. It stated that, ?There is a general misconception that parents don?t need to worry about ?games?. This is reinforced by a generational divide which means that most parents wont play the game themselves or be aware of the huge developments that there have been in game technology and realism. The information that does exist is generally on websites, which relies on parents seeking it out in the first place.?

To help with this, the website Ask About Games has been relaunched to help parents make informed decisions about the games they buy for their children. As well as detailing the age rating system it also enlightens parents on how video games can be a fun collaborative experience for the whole family.

A tougher stance on preventing children playing inappropriate games is welcome, yet with PEGI now in charge, having a look at the age ratings they?ve given to some of the latest games released this year, a few of which are?quite?unexpected, is where there might be some contention. For example, a 15-year-old cannot purchase Activision?s latest tie-in of The Amazing Spider-Man for the PS3 or Xbox 360, given that?s it?s rated 16. Nor can they purchase The Last Story for the Nintendo Wii, which is also rated 16. Should an 11-year-old happen to have an extra amount of pocket money, they cannot take games such as Kingdom Hearts 3D or Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS over to the counter, given that these two games are rated 12.??

What do you think on the legislation of the PEGI rating system? Do you think children will always find a way to play what they want? Are you a parent that will give the rating more thought before buying?

9 Ways to Avoid Getting Ripped Off on Battery Lighting | Epou

Posted by Eta Phi Sports on Jul 30, 2012 in Rip Offs | 0 comments

Browse the aisles or webpage of any home improvement or lighting store and you will find an overwhelming array of battery-powered LED lighting products. each manufacturer makes bold claims about brightness and longevity, but can the claims be trusted? and more importantly, can you identify which product will live up to your expectations BEFORE you put your money on the counter? here are some quick and easy tips for avoiding buyer?s remorse on your next battery lighting purchase. Some of these tips apply primarily to white LEDs and alkaline batteries, the most common bulb and battery type in these products, but you should be able to apply the general principles to nearly any battery lighting product.

1. Know what you need. Small batteries mean small, portable products, but if portability is your key concern the product should be one you use intermittently or you will have to accept shorter battery life. If you need long battery life in a product that gets lots of use, look for a product with a larger battery size; basically a larger gas tank. as a general rule, each step up in battery size, triple-A to double-A and so on, slightly more than doubles battery capacity. If you need high light output and a long battery life, look for products with a greater number of larger batteries. Knowing your priorities will help you decide what tradeoffs you are willing to make.

2. make sure the battery size and count is large enough to balance the load. Compare the number of LEDs and the number and size of batteries in your prospective purchase. The higher the total battery volume to LED ratio, the brighter it is likely to be and longer it is likely to last. regardless of what the marketing says, six triple-A batteries will not drive a twelve LED light bar for very long with any kind of brightness.

3. bigger batteries are better than more batteries. while the physics behind it is beyond the scope of this article, powering a product with a larger battery is generally more efficient than using more batteries of a smaller size. for example 3 double-A batteries would be preferable to 7 triple-A?s even though the theoretical capacity is nearly identical.

4. High quality LED products should have at least three individual batteries. regardless of their capacity, triple-A?s, double-A?s, C?s, and D?s all supply 1.5 volts initially, slowly dropping to.9 volts over the life of the battery. for maximum brightness most white, green, or blue LEDs require 3 to 4.5 volts. this means an LED running on one battery needs a special circuit to increase the voltage. Unfortunately, using one battery to do the job of three naturally reduced battery life by two-thirds. so unless small size is a high priority, look for three or more batteries and you?ll get those 3 volts from start to finish.

5. LEDs and 9-volt batteries don?t mix. while there are ways around it if small size is a priority, for the most part 9-volt batteries are not well suited for LED applications. even if the product designer has put in the proper effort to match the demands of the LED to the output of the battery, 9-volt batteries have less capacity than a double-A battery of the same chemistry.

6. Don?t get taken in by peak performance. Batteries actually operate slightly above their top rated performance for the first few hours. It depends somewhat on the product, but you should expect the in-store demo or the fresh-from-the-box performance to be slightly brighter than your normal experience as the batteries output diminishes over time. If the initially brightness only just meets your needs, it may disappoint you down the line.

7. Beware of products with no battery life claims or extremely high claims without justification. It should raise a red flag if the product doesn?t make any claims about battery life. good battery life is a key selling point, and if the product doesn?t make any claim it may be hiding something. On the flip side, if the product claims an extremely long battery life make sure the product has a good number of large batteries to back it up. otherwise the product must be running at a lower light level (which you may decide is acceptable for your application) or it was measured past the point where most users would consider the batteries dead.

8. Don?t assume a high wattage LED is actually running at full power. while this may change under new labeling regulations, there is currently no guarantee that a product advertising high watt LEDs is actually providing maximum brightness by supplying them with full power. Unfortunately there?s no way based on the packaging to evaluate whether or not the product actually puts the maximum wattage through each LED. just keep in mind that the wattage rating of the LED is not a brightness claim.

9. Maintain realistic expectations. as much as we might wish otherwise, batteries plus LEDs does not equal magic. There must be a balance between light output, battery capacity, and battery life. If you want bright light and/or long battery life you will need a large battery count and size. There is simply no way to beat the math.

It may take a little bit of extra thought, but if you follow these tips it will go a long way toward avoiding disappointment next time you pick up an LED battery lighting product.

Kim and Li deliver weightlifting masterclasses

Charismatic North Korean Kim Un-Guk and China's Li Xueying broke a raft of records as they handed out two masterclasses in weightlifting at the London Olympics here on Monday.

Kim set a world record in the total thanks to equalling another in the snatch that was the basis for an emphatic victory in the men's -62kg class.

Li broke two new Olympic records as she crushed her rivals on the way to claiming gold in the women's -58kg class in a third day of enthralling action at a packed ExCel arena.

While Li was understated in her performance, Kim was anything but as he whipped the 6,000-capacity stadium into a frenzy with his flamboyant showmanship at the barbell.

Kim snatched 153kg, also a new Olympic record, to match Chinese lifter Shi Zhiyong's world record, and then went on to clean and jerk 174kg for a combined total of 327kg, beating the previous record held by China's Zhang Jie by 1kg.

Colombian Oscar Figueroa claimed a shock silver with a total of 317kg (140, 177), his clean and jerk a new Olympic record, while Indonesia's Irawan Eko Yuli took bronze with 317kg (145, 172) on the bodyweight rule.

Each time he set foot on the podium, Kim grinned at the cheering crowd, a roar as he approached the barbell eliciting similar grunts in reply from the delighted spectators.

Kim's reaction after each successful lift was one of unmitigated joy, prompting him to scream, shake his right fist over the bar and jump in the air before rapidly skipping off the platform. The crowd, quite simply, adored it.

His superiority in the snatch saw him take a massive 13kg lead over Zhang, the favourite for the event, into the clean and jerk. The Asiad champion failed with his third clean and jerk and missed a podium place by 3kg.

In the women's competition, Asian Games champion Li, also the current world silver medallist, produced a stunning performance, recording a combined total of 246kg after snatching 108kg and registering a best in the clean and jerk of 138kg. Both the snatch and total were Olympic records.

She narrowly missed a final clean and jerk at 144kg which would have given her the world record.

"I didn't do well last year at the world champs and that was a hard lesson to learn," said Li, playing down her superiority over the rest of the field.

"In every competition, I try my best. I don't pay attention to my rivals, strong or not.

"I was a little nervous because it's my first Olympic Games. I was a bit hasty on my first snatch, I wasn't quite as calm as normal."

Thailand's Pimsiri Sirikaew took silver with a total of 236kg (100, 136), with Ukraine's Yuliya Kalina claiming bronze with 235kg (106, 129).

The gold medal showing was sweet revenge for Li over Belarus' current world champion Natassia Novikava, who trumped the Chinese lifter at the 2011 world championships in Paris.

Novikava dramatically saw her final clean and jerk at 133kg ruled out by the judges after she tottered on the stage and the Belarus lifter missed out altogether on the podium, finishing down in seventh place.

10 reasons to drop Windows for Mountain Lion

22 hrs.

I guess you could say I started cheating on Windows back in October of 2010. That?s when Apple debuted the revamped?MacBook Air. For the first time, I could resume working almost as soon as I flipped the lid on a laptop, thanks to the way the?notebook?leveraged its flash memory. (Intel and?Ultrabook?makers wouldn?t offer a similar instant-on experience until a year later.)

The Air was a work of art, but it didn?t feel complete until?OS X Lion?arrived last year. With key time-saving features like Auto Save and Mission Control for faster multitasking, I started leaving behind my Windows notebook more and more.?Now that?Mountain Lion?is here, I may never look back. Here are 10 reasons why you might want to do the same.

iCloud Keeps Devices, Files in Sync

Make a change on a Pages document in Mountain Lion and iCloud will automatically update it on your iPad. It doesn't get any easier than that if you happen to own Apple's slate. You don't even have to think about whether to bring your MacBook or iPad with you when you leave the house, because everything is already in sync.

iCloud also keeps your Numbers and Keynote files up to date, and neatly presents all of your recent documents when you open any of the above apps. I just wish Apple's iWork suite could automatically save docs as Office-friendly versions by default for sharing with Windows users; instead, you have to check off a box every time.

Reminders App Uses Your Location

What's the point of putting together a to-do list if you're not going to follow through? The Reminders app in Mountain Lion vastly increases the chances you're going to cross more stuff off by the end of the day.

For starters, you can pin any list to your desktop just by double-clicking it, so you'll be less likely to ignore those tasks. Second ? and this is a biggie for me ? you can add a location to specific reminders. For example, just this morning I set a reminder to pick up my TransitChek card for when I arrived at work, and my iPhone buzzed as I emerged from the subway. I have no excuses now.

AirPlay Mirroring Transforms TV?

Usually when I pull out my laptop out at home, the kids moan and groan that daddy is about to do work again. But Mountain Lion's AirPlay Mirroring feature instantly changed their minds. With a single click I started streaming photos I took at a nearby park to an Apple TV. Then I streamed a trailer for "Ice Age 4" from YouTube.

Even better, I could mirror a game of ?RC Mini Racers? from the Mac to my HDTV, and within seconds the kids wanted to take over. AirPlay Mirroring is so simple to set up compared to Intel's WiDi and any DLNA solution on the Windows side, I can easily see Apple TVs popping up in classrooms and conference rooms.

Speak to Type

Take this down, Microsoft. Mountain Lion converts your words into text anywhere you can type. This is a great way to compose memos, emails or even tweet when your hands are full. It couldn?t be easier to start dictating. Just double tap the Function key to bring up a little microphone, then tap it again to finish. While we wish dictation worked offline, it has proved accurate in our testing, including punctuation.

Send and Receive Texts from the Desktop

When I?m at work I find texts on my iPhone pretty distracting, so I welcome the new Messages application for Mountain Lion. It integrates iMessages and all of your favorite IM clients (AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo, Jabber, etc.) into a single app. This way I can communicate with my wife when she?s on her iPhone right from the desktop. And if she sends me a photo I can double-click it to make it bigger and then share it on Facebook.

Game Center: Take That, Xbox

There?s no question that Windows still trumps the Mac when it comes to the number of games available, but Mountain Lion brings a secret weapon. With Game Center your Mac can tap into a community that has grown to 130 million iOS gamers, enabling you to compare scores and achievements across both Mac and iOS games. Plus, a growing number of titles let you challenge your buddies on their iPhone and iPad, such as ?Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy.?

Faster, Smarter Browsing With Safari?

As someone who constantly has too many tabs open, the new Tab View is a godsend for me. Just pinch to zoom out, and you?ll see large thumbnails of all of your open tabs, making it easier to see what?s what and decide what to close.

Safari is smarter than Windows? Internet Explorer in other ways. The new unified address bar is another huge time-saver, which presents Top Sites, recommended Google Search results and bookmarks and your surfing history as you type.

Notifications All In One Place

While I like the way Windows 8 shows your notifications within its Live Tiles for apps, Mountain Lion?s Notification Center makes it easier to see all of your alerts at a glance. Notification Center is also highly customizable. You can choose how many alerts you want to display from each app and the order of how they appear. Plus, you can turn all of the notifications off with a click when you need to be heads down. Bonus: you can post right to Twitter and Facebook from this menu.

Mail VIPs: Never Miss an Email from Your Boss

This unsung feature of Mountain Lion makes it easy to set up an instant folder of messages for very important people, whether it?s your boss, spouse or anyone else whose emails you simply cannot miss.

All you have to do is star that person?s name from within a message and you?ll have a VIP folder. You can even tweak the settings so that you?ll only get Notifications when new messages from VIPs arrive.

It?s More Like Windows Than Windows 8

Recently, Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart issued this tweet: ?OS X Mountain Lion is a more natural upgrade from Windows 7 than moving to Windows 8.? There?s actually some truth to this comment because Windows 8 represents a radical user interface change for the world?s most popular desktop OS. Mountain Lion may borrow plenty of elements from iOS, from Launchpad to apps like Notes, but it?s still very much a traditional operating system. In Windows 8, the desktop is its own app, which may prove jarring to a lot of users. Mountain Lion could very well be that more familiar alternative.

Murder Your Darlings: Interview with poet and activist Jo Ross

Jo Ross recently published a magnificent debut poetry collection, Meeting Bone Man,?from Main Street Rag Publishing. I've read with Ross a couple times, and I think he's one of the best around. He graciously agreed to answer a few questions for me:

Me:?How did you come to writing poetry?

Jo Ross: I started writing poetry in high school and boy, was it bad poetry. It was sentimental, predictable stuff. I continued in college but got more into songwriting. The lyrical work tried to be poetry but it really wasn?t. As I studied, read, and wrote more, I gave myself more and more to poetry. When I was in graduate school, in my mid-to-late 20s I began to take it more seriously.

Me:?What was your inspiration for the image of the archetypal character of ?Bone Man??

Ross: The death of my mother was the genesis for Bone Man. Her death struck me very hard and I felt I was ?seeing death? everywhere. So I went with that image. I wanted to explore what it would look like to see Bone Man, the personification of death, at a party, on the beach, driving in the car next to me? After all, I felt I was seeing him everywhere, so why not describe him in these places. It became a way to resist him, a way at least to say ?I see you!?

Originally, the Bone Man poems were not part of the manuscript that became this book. But thankfully, my friend David Keplinger, director of the Creative Writing program at American University, suggested I use the Bone Man poems as the book?s organizing principle. I?m glad he suggested it. That suggestion helped the book fall into place.

Me:?You often write poetry about other people when so many poets are much more focused on writing about themselves as windows to the world; was there an event that got you started in this direction, or have you always written the poetry of witness?

Ross: In some ways, writing poetry of witness can mask writing about myself. In writing about forgotten people in Darfur, I was, on another level, writing about abandoned parts of myself. Coming to know myself as a Gay man in America, I found myself writing about people or groups that were hated. I didn?t always write explicitly about Gay and Lesbian people but I saw my own experiences of exclusion present in the exclusions of others. So writing poetry of witness, on a deeper level, is sometimes about my own life.

I also think poetry of witness, poetry which some might call political, is very important in our time. We sometimes do terrible things to each other and poetry can be an effective voice to speak about those things. Perhaps we can make the world more beautiful and more kind with poetry about the ugly and cruel ways we sometimes treat one another.

Me:?Tell me about Cool Disco Dan; what appeals to you about his work?

Ross: Cool Disco Dan is a graffiti artist in Washington, D.C. He?s been around, off and on, since the 1980s in the Red Line corridor of Washington, D.C.?s Metro system. My friend, Jefferson Pinder, first pointed out Cool Disco Dan?s work to me. Two elements of graffit art fascinate me. First, the announcement of self. Why would someone, especially a young person, feel the need to shout his or her name in huge, painted letters? Do these artists feel unseen or unheard? I think that?s a fascinating element of graffiti art. Also, I love graffiti art that seeks to memorialize someone who has died. Often, in D.C. at least, a local murder victim will be memorialized by a graffiti artist. The victim?s name might never be known to most people if the artist did not paint his name and birth and death dates. In this way, graffiti art is a modern elegy. It brings the dead back to life.

Me:?Will you share the impetus for the Darfur poems from the collection? What inspired them?

Ross: One summer evening, a few years ago, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum held a slide show on one of the museum?s outside walls, titled ?Faces of Darfur.? I went to this event and sat there on a hot August night, watching the faces of people suffering in Darfur flash over and over before me. I knew I wanted to write something about Darfur?poetry of witness again. So I read everything I could find about the crisis in Darfur and then began to write. I found myself writing persona poems, which I?d never written before. As a result, the Darfur poems are written in the voice of a worker in a refugee camp who washes and prepares the dead bodies. I hope these poems invite the readers to feel and see and hear what was happening in Darfur, because most of us will never go there.

Me:?The thing that surprised me most about this collection was seeing that many of the poems either hadn?t been previously published. Have you encountered resistance in publishing your work, maybe because of the possibly graphic subject matter?

Ross: I always feel very fortunate that many of my poems have been published in various journals and anthologies. I don?t know that I?ve experienced resistance to my sometimes-graphic subject matter. I do choose carefully the journals where I send my work.

Me:?Which writers inspire you and why?

Ross: There are so many poets and writers whose work inspires me. For years, I have loved William Butler Yeats, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, and Lucille Clifton. Among living poets today I have great respect for Naomi Shihab Nye, E. Ethelbert Miller, Martin Espada, Randall Horton, Aracelis Girmay, Niki Herd, Jericho Brown?to name a few!

Me:?Who are you reading now?

Ross: Right now I?m reading lots of fiction by Junot Diaz. His work is magnificent.

Me: ?You?ve been doing a lot of readings to support the book. Any favorite venues or interesting stories you?d like to share?

Ross: I?m really grateful I?ve been able to do so many readings around the country. I thought it would be harder than it was. I had a terrific experience at a reading at DG Wills Bookstore in La Jolla, California. That bookstore has hosted lots of amazing poets and writers over the years so it was an honor to be there. I also had a wonderful experience in a reading at Saint Mary?s College in Indiana. Many friends were able to come so that was an especially terrific evening for me. The launch reading at Busboys & Poets in Washington, D.C. was also wonderful. The D.C. poetry community is a real family and it was great to launch the book here.

Me:?You?re a teacher as well as poet; how do you balance the workload and still find time to write? Do you find that teaching adds to or takes away from your writing?

Ross: Thankfully, I?m not one of those writers who experiences long writing deserts. I find a way, both when I?m busy and when I?m not, to write at least a little everyday. The school calendar actually gives you a lot of time off?the summer! That?s a real gift to a writer.

I love teaching and I think it certainly adds to my writing. I get to spend my day working with young people on their own writing and discussing great literature with them. There?s a great dialogue in teaching. The teacher presents information-- or the text we?re all reading is presented-- and then we all respond. Teaching provides an opportunity to discuss some of life?s most important realities. What could be better for a writer?

How It Works: Laser Beaming Recharges UAV in Flight

Tom Nugent likes to call his company?s current project a "wireless extension cord." Not a bad analogy for LaserMotive?s laser transmitter/receiver system, which recently beamed enough energy to a 17.5-pound drone to keep it airborne at least 48 hours?about 46 hours longer than the drone can usually fly.

The aircraft was Lockheed Martin?s Stalker unmanned aerial system (UAS). In June the defense giant held a private wind-tunnel test at LaserMotive?s Seattle-area home. Although the tech is in its early stages (it?s a technology demonstration, not yet a prototype), Nugent?s comparison proved correct: "You?re plugging a system into the wall, taking that electricity and converting it to light and transmitting that light through open air to a receiver, which converts the light back into electricity," Nugent says.

Manned fighter planes, the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor craft, and some helicopters can refuel in flight from tankers. But that technique isn?t practiced with gas-powered drones or with those that run on electricity, which have no choice but to land to recharge their batteries. A scaled-up version of the laser charger could keep aircraft aloft indefinitely.

The laser-transmitter demonstrator consists of a 3 x 6?foot optics table holding two gallium arsenide-based diode laser arrays. The laser arrays sit in boxes about half the size of a loaf of bread and shine into a set of lenses and mirrors. The lenses and mirrors shape and merge the laser beams and focus them into a gimbaled mirror, which in turn directs them toward a receiver.

For this test, the receiver was a thin photovoltaic panel attached to the bottom of the Stalker drone?s wing. The Stalker itself was mounted at the end of small wind tunnel where it remained in simulated flight two full days, its 9.5-foot wing positioned vertically to expose the photovoltaic panel to LaserMotive?s system as it beamed power to the receiver from 30 feet away.

The laser system can transfer only about 20 to 25 percent of the electricity it takes from its ground source. But drones like the Stalker don?t require enormous amounts of energy. In the June test, its battery held more energy after the test than when it began.

Most importantly, the ability to recharge an aircraft?s batteries in-flight offers big advantages, eliminating the need to make fuel stops that lose flight time and subject the plane to added risk, says program manager Tom Koonce of Lockheed?s famous Skunk Works in Palmdale, Calif. "A ground-to-air recharging system like this allows us to provide practically unlimited flight endurance to extend and expand the mission profiles that the Stalker vehicle can fulfill."

Nugent says the next step will be a proof-of-concept flight outdoors, though when and where hasn?t been announced. LaserMotive?s system includes computer software that uses video signals to keep the laser pointed at the receiver as the drone flies, and the company has already demonstrated that it can beam power to a receiver at least a kilometer away, which Nugent says is plenty of range to recharge a drone in flight. His company won a NASA Centennial Challenge Prize for beaming power that far in 2009. With larger optics and more expensive lasers, the system?s range could be extended to hundreds of kilometers in a straight line, but the Earth?s atmosphere would limit how far away a drone could be from its power source when flying at lower altitudes.

Laser power beaming is an idea that?s been around for years, but Nugent and his colleagues think its time has finally arrived, partly because of changes on the home front. The Federal Aviation Administration is in the process of loosening regulations that until recently have limited small UAV flying mainly to hobbyists. So providing a way to keep drones in the air more than a couple of hours could provide a major boost to an unmanned-aircraft market already poised to explode.

"Once people see that this capability exists, they?ll start thinking of ways to use it that we might not even consider," Nugent said. That?s why a colleague of his suggested a new slogan: "Think outside the battery."
